Indigenous Art & Cultural Workshop – Celebrating Culture, Creativity & Community

Tomaree Neighbourhood Centre recently hosted an incredible Indigenous Art & Cultural Workshop, facilitated by the talented Jason Russell from Koori Colours Art Gallery — and what a special experience it was for everyone involved.

Participant Ella Holland with her stunning art piece.

The workshop was filled with learning, creativity, culture and connection. Participants explored storytelling through art, discovering how symbols, colour and design can represent personal journeys, family, Country and community. It was inspiring to see each person bring their own story to life on canvas in such a meaningful way.

Watching the finished artworks come together in full colour was a real highlight. Each piece was unique, powerful and deeply personal — a true reflection of the stories and connections shared throughout the workshop.

There were plenty of laughs, great conversations, a few Kookaburra visits, amazing pizza, and even a little bit of swimming along the way! The atmosphere was relaxed, welcoming and full of encouragement as everyone supported one another through the creative process.

A special mention to Aunty Mook, Aunty Jackie and Aunty Susie for sharing cultural knowledge, stories and plenty of fun throughout the workshop. 🩷

Huge thanks to Jas and Kez from Koori Colours Art Gallery for facilitating such a meaningful and culturally rich experience, and to Chris and the team at Domino’s Pizza Tanilba Bay for opening early to support our group.

This project was proudly funded by the NSW Premier’s Department, supporting cultural learning and community connection.

We’re excited to share that the completed artworks will be showcased at an upcoming exhibition at Tomaree Library and Community Centre on March 20th 2026 at 6:00pm - all Community are welcome to attend.
